Devastated: Barry McMullan says the tragedy hasn't sunk in yet

The brother of a west Belfast man who was mown down by a hit and run motorist in England told last night how it was a "miracle" other family members had not also been killed.

Barry McMullan (40) was speaking to the Belfast Telegraph after his elder brother Edmund died tragically in England in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 43-year-old postman, from New Barnsley Crescent, was walking home after St Patrick's Day celebrations in Corby when he was struck by a blue Rover car. He later died in Kettering Hospital of multiple organ damage.

"It is devastating," said Barry, who flew over to Northamptonshire on Sunday to be with other family members.

"It just hasn't sunk in yet. Ebbis - that's what we all called him - had been at the pub with his son Conor (22), sister Jacqueline and her husband Martin.

"Martin told me they were coming home singing when suddenly a car flew round the corner and hit Ebbis, who was at the back of the group. If it had happened 10 seconds earlier, the car would have hit all four of them."

Mr McMullan is survived by his wife Mandy (42), son Conor, daughter Nicola (25) and granddaughter Jordan (6).
