Orde to attend loyalist meeting

By Emily Moulton
Wednesday, 4 April 2007

Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde, US Consul General Dean Pittman and representatives from the main churches are among the delegates meeting at the Stormont Hotel today to hammer out the details of the final phase of the £1m loyalist conflict transformation project.

More than 100 stakeholders will take part in workshops which will focus around a set of objectives derived by the Conflict Transformation Initiative (CTI) - a scheme run by Farset International to help UDA-dominated loyalist areas move away from paramilitarism.

The Government has been heavily criticised by some politicians over it's decision to give the organisation connected to the UDA more than £1m to leave conflict behind.

But at a media briefing yesterday, Frankie Gallagher from the UDA-aligned Ulster Political Research Group told journalists the money would be used to help stakeholders such as the police, government departments and local businesses engage with loyalist communities as well as develop education and training programs.

He also said one of the things that had been discussed was developing new flag designs that moved away from paramilitary emblems.
