Newly-crowned Miss Northern Ireland Melissa Patton had no problem stepping into her new role yesterday - despite having stayed up all night.

The 19-year-old former air hostess was unable to grab any beauty sleep after her emphatic win as she was inundated with phone calls from family and friends to congratulate her.

But the lack of shut-eye did not prevent the bubbly brunette from completing her hectic round of interviews and promotional engagements which began just after breakfast yesterday.

After her name was called out on Monday night, Melissa was whisked backstage where she was presented with a tiara and sash from current Miss World Tat'ana Kucharova and outgoing Miss Northern Ireland Catherine Milligan.

By the time she got back to her hotel room at 3am, she was inundated with phone calls.

Before she knew it, it was time for breakfast and Melissa, who beat 26 other hopefuls for the coveted title, was whisked off to open a new hotel and then on to Junction One before arriving at Citybeat radio station for an interview in the afternoon.

Besides picking up the title, Melissa, from Joanmount Gardens in Belfast, has also gained automatic entry into the Miss World pageant, which will be held in the city of Sanya in Hainan Province, south China, on December 1 this year.

She also received a month- long, all-expenses paid trip, to China to represent Northern Ireland as well as an exclusive contract with Alison Campbell Modelling Agency, which organises the Miss Northern Ireland competition.
