A taste of Madchester descended on Portrush on Saturday as the Happy Mondays
took to the stage for The Beach Party 2007.
Thousands of revellers who had braved the initially damp weather had spirits
lifted with the sudden change in weather.
Happy Mondays back together and making one of their first appearances in
Northern Ireland since playing Belfast's Limelight in 1989 didn't disappoint.
With the sun now shimmering across the Atlantic Ocean, lead singer Shaun
Ryder launched into classics 'Step On' and 'Kinky Afro' as well as Black
Grape hits.
There were initially doubts over whether BBC Radio 1's Pete Tong would be
playing the event after the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport caused chaos
to scheduled UK flights.
However the superstar DJ was able to make it by flying over in a private
jet. His set successfully worked fans into a frenzy.
Belfast act Alloy Mental's unique fusion of electronica and indie punk, was
also a crowd-pleaser.
The band is a collaboration between local DJ Phil Kieran and songwriter
Martin Corrigan who became friends while working together at Shine in
Belfast. Danny Todd completes the trio. Fans lapped up tracks from their
recently released album 'We Have Control'.
Also taking to the stage were the Scratch Perverts and local DJ Col Hamilton.
Headline act Basement Jaxx and their colourful musical entourage was a
perfect ending to the day. The Brixton duo whipped up a sandstorm infont of
the 20,000-strong crowd - banging out their high-octane feelgood dance
anthems during a mammoth live show.
As if on queue when the music began to draw to a close so too did the spell
of good weather. But for many hot and sweaty party-goers the fine drizzle
was a welcome addition.
