Why Free Derry Corner is now pretty in pink. . .

One of Northern Ireland's most symbolic landmarks has been painted bright pink.

The iconic Free Derry Corner, an internationally-recognised symbol for civil rights, received the make-over yesterday from organisers and volunteers of the Gasyard Feile in solidarity with the gay community.

The gable wall, first painted with the slogan 'You Are Now Entering Free Derry' in 1969, will remain pink for the duration of the Pride celebrations to be held in the city from August 13 to 18.

Jim Collins, spokesman for the feile, said: "The feile decided they wanted to do something for the gay community and we thought this was a good public, creative and visual way of celebrating Gay Pride.

"More and more people now are accepting people's right to sexual freedom. There will always be a small minority who you could call homophobic, but they are not representative of the wider public."

Mr Collins said that the new pink facade was in keeping with Free Derry Corner's historical usage.

"The wall is such a powerful symbol. It is all about freedom and we want to utilise it in a contemporary way. It is not a static monument, but something that is alive and has significance."

David McCartney, project co- ordinator with gay rights group The Rainbow Project, said the gay community in Derry were delighted.

"This is a gift to Pride from the Gasyard Feile and it is brilliant," he said.

"The Free Derry Wall is a powerful symbol of civil liberties.

"We have had a really positive response and support from the Gasyard, Dove House and a whole range of different groups.

"We have also had local boxer John Duddy's best wishes for Pride and him saying it is great - Derry is becoming so progressive."

The Pride festival, organised by the Rainbow Project in conjunction with Derry City Council and the Community Foundation For Northern Ireland, will feature a range of events in the city.

The programme, which will include a conference and marquee, will take place at a number of venues, including the City Hotel, The Void Gallery, Sandinos bar and nightclub, The Linenhall Bar and the Unison Centre.
