Pool closed thanks to dirty diver

Saturday, August 04, 2007

A swimming pool has been closed for the third time in as many weeks after suspected excrement was found in the water.

Another 24-hour sterilisation process was said to have taken place on Monday at Riversdale Leisure Centre in Strabane when swimmers were again turned away from the adult pool.

There are now fears of a health risk from the serial soiler after the latest incident. SDLP councillor Eugene McMenamin blasted the culprits.

"The cost of implementing a clean-up operation in the wake of such an incident as this is huge," he said.

"There is also the health risk posed to other swimmers when something of this nature occurs.

"You also have disruption to summer schemes and swimming lessons.

"Whoever did this should be ashamed of themselves - and the fact that it happened in the adult's pool means it was hardly an accident like a child might make."

Paddy McDermott, of the Riversdale Otters swimming club, said he was " very disappointed" to hear of the dirty diver.

"The pool has always been impeccably kept, the staff work very hard and we have never heard of anything like this before," he said.

"This is disappointing for swimmers and for the staff, who take a great pride in the pool, it is always very clean.

"I sincerely hope that this does not put people off swimming there."

Strabane District Council Chairman, Councillor Gerard Foley has requested a report after the summer recess in relation to the matter.

"Ratepayers can be assured that Strabane District Council is committed to providing high quality services and showing strong civic leadership on this matter."
