Wet summer leaves Ulster beaches polluted with sewage
Monday, 27 August 2007
Ecologists are warning that the wet summer has left some of the Uster's best-known beaches polluted with raw sewage and other waste sludge.
A Marine Conservation Society report says three well-used beaches at Newcastle, Ballyholme and Carnlough have missed EU standards.
It says storms swept raw sewage and rubbish out to sea and then back onto the sand.
The news highlights the need for radical reform of storm drains and sewage disposal system.
The issue is one of the biggest challenges facing the power-sharing executive when ministers return to work next month.
