Ormeau Park remains under threat of development, local campaigners have
warned.
The Save Ormeau Park campaign has held a number of meetings with
councillors, but says it fears the park is still being considered as a
possible venue for a sports stadium.
And the campaigners will be holding a public meeting at Cooke Centenary Hall
tonight at 7pm to discuss the implications for the loss of open space in an
area that is becoming increasingly developed.
Belfast City Council officials are due to present a report to the Parks and
Leisure Committee on Thursday September 13 and the campaigners say this may
recommend that money be spent to further assess the park's development
potential.
The Parks and Leisure Committee would then vote on whether to go to the next
stage.
The Save Ormeau Park campaign said that DUP, PUP, Alliance, SDLP and Sinn
Fein committee members have indicated they are opposed to taking the process
further, while the position of the UUP remains unclear.
A Save Ormeau Park representative said: "There are so many reasons why
Ormeau Park is unsuitable and should be ruled out immediately.
"Transport and access are two of the biggest issues. Sorting them out
is likely to cost taxpayers money."
