Jail for ear-biting 'monster'

By Paul Higgins
Saturday, 8 September 2007

A "monster" who bit his best friend's ear in a drunken assault was jailed for a year yesterday after he agreed to spend a further year on probation.

Omagh Crown Court, sitting in Belfast, heard that on December 16 last year, Shane Kolbohm had been in Dorman's Bar in Coalisland drinking with his friend Paul Conlon when a fight broke out.

Prosecuting lawyer Jennifer Connolly said the friends were playing pool when Kolbohm left the table, later being spotted by Mr Conlon being taken out a side door but added that when he tried to intervene, Kolbohm "appeared quite aggressive".

However, she said that instead of calming down, Kolbohm punched Conlon and grabbed him, forcing a finger into his mouth and biting his ear.

Describing his behaviour as "outrageous", Judge Kevin Finnegan QC said the "prodigious amount of drink you took that night clearly turned you into a monster".
