Hit-and run appeal

By Victor Gordon
Saturday, 10 November 2007

Police yesterday renewed their appeal for witnesses to a hit-and-run accident as the victim had surgery in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

James McCaffrey (75) has a fractured skull and broken arm after being struck by a car on Wednesday night.

Yesterday afternoon, he had surgery on his arm and his head injuries were being monitored.

The incident happened as Mr McCaffrey crossed Portadown's Garvaghy Road at around 7.30pm on Wednesday.

The car involved - thought to have been a Peugeot 106 or 206 - sped away.

Police say a lorry driver was among people who rushed to the man's aid.

"We are convinced that someone must have seen the driver or the car and we appeal to them to come forward," police said. "The number to ring is 0845 600 8000."
