Police last night confirmed that the body found on the shore of Lough Neagh was that of missing Londonderry father-of-six Michael (Gerard) Hampson.

The 53-year-old's body was recovered on Wednesday but his identity was only confirmed by police yesterday.

Mr Hampson, who had lived for many years in the Fergleen Park area of Galliagh before moving to the Northland Road area of Derry, was last seen at a bus stop in Maghera, Co Derry on Friday, December 7.

Police confirmed that a post-mortem examination had been carried out.

However further inquiries are now being made in order to determine the cause of Mr Hampson's death.

A PSNI spokesman said today: "At this time, police are treating his death as unexplained.

"Police are trying to trace Mr Hampson's movements since December 7.

"They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who saw suspicious activity around the loughshore in the last week- and saw any clothing, cars or people, at any time of the day."

The discovery comes just comes just days after Mr Hampson's family issued an appeal for him to contact them.

Anyone with information about suspicious activity at Lough Neagh is asked to contact police at Magherafelt on 0845 600 8000.
