Hollywood actress Sarah Carter could soon be following in the footsteps of A list icons Heather Graham and Shirley MacLaine.

That's because the sultry star of American television series Shark has been cast in a new supernatural thriller directed by Paddy Breathnach, which will have several scenes filmed in Belfast.

Carter - who currently plays rookie prosecutor Madeline Poe alongside Sebastain Stark (James Woods) in the hit Channel 5 US legal drama - will appear in 'Red Mist' with co-stars Arielle Kebbel (The Grudge 2) and Stephen Dillane (Spy Game).

The 27-year-old Canadian actress is perhaps best known for playing Alicia Baker in Smallville.

Her character had a romantic relationship with Superman/Clark Kent, as portrayed by Tom Welling.

Filming on Breathnach's thriller beganlast week and is due to finish in November.

Breathnach's last film was 'Shrooms' in 2007 - a horror about a group of American backpackers and their Irish guide who are stalked by a serial killer.

Breathnach is also the director behind the 2004 comedy 'Man about Dog', which stars Allen Leech, Ciaran Nolan and Tom Murphy.

The film follows three boys from Belfast, who travel by van with their greyhound Cerberus to a racing competition in Clonmel, County Tipperary.

En route, they avoid a psychotic "bookie" they used to work for, members of the Irish Republican Army, and a band of insane chainsaw wielding Irish Travellers whom they double crossed.
