And here's the news on Conor Bradford's salary

By Claire McNeilly
Saturday, 23 February 2008

BBC Good Morning Ulster broadcaster Conor Bradford yesterday revealed his annual salary live on air.

The move comes after some politicians demanded to know what top presenters earn, following recent public concern about MLAs' salaries and their employment of family relatives.

Mr Bradford, who is employed by the Corporation on a freelance basis, said his take home pay for the daily morning show amounts to £29,000 per annum.

The broadcaster made the announcement during a discussion with the DUP's Gregory Campbell - who rents his constituency office from his wife and employs her in a secretarial role.

The MLA had explicitly linked the issue of MLA pay and the BBC on a previous occasion, saying : "The key factor is that BBC journalists highlighted MLAs' and MPs' pay issues while they themselves are exempt from revealing theirs. Yet both are funded by the taxpayer and anyone can inspect MLAs' pay. "

But, during yesterday's debate on air, Mr Campbell had been jibing him about BBC secrecy policy on presenter pay when Mr Bradford defended his position.

"Look, I earn £29,000 a year for my Good Morning Ulster contract," he said.

"That is not hidden, that is open for everyone to see. That is my salary. Have you got any problems with that?"

Earlier in the programme, Mr Bradford said: "I don't get constituency offices.

"I don't employ members of my family in a secretarial capacity, if you want to bring a personal element into this, which you clearly do."

Mr Campbell had referred to presenters "whoever they may be" having "a specific clause in their contract that precludes anyone knowing what their salaries or expenses is" and "having the hypocrisy to interview others".

The DUP man also challenged Mr Bradford's comments on public money.

"Is that the same money out of which you get your salary?" he said.
