Brennan facing weeks in solitary
Thursday, 28 February 2008
Maze escapee Pol Brennan looks set to remain in solitary confinement for at least two more weeks after officials at the Texas immigration detention centre where he's being held this week renewed his classification as a security risk.
Brennan, who was detained on January 27 at a Texas immigration checkpoint for having a lapsed work permit, was moved to solitary confinement on February 1.
He was told that the move was to safeguard him from other detainees, who might attack him if they learned of his IRA past.
Brennan was among 38 IRA prisoners who escaped the Maze prison in September 1983. He was arrested by the FBI in 1993 living in Berkley, California.
In 2000, Britain dropped its extradition case against him.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph by telephone, Brennan said he hopes to be released or post bail after a hearing scheduled to take place on March 11.
