Orde colleague found dead

Manchester's top policeman had worked with PSNI chief

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

An investigation was under way last night after a former colleague of PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde was found dead at a Welsh beauty spot.

The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police Michael Todd went missing on Monday night while walking in Snowdonia.

The head of one of the biggest police forces in Britain, the body of 50-year-old Chief Constable Todd was discovered on part of the mountain called Bwlch Glas yesterday.

The cause of death is not yet known but it is understood suicide is one line of inquiry.

During his career, Chief Constable Todd forged strong links with the media to improve policing and allowed himself to be hit with a Taser gun in order to show that the weapons are safe.

Speaking yesterday afternoon, Deputy Chief Constable Dave Whatton said: " Our Chief Constable Michael Todd was off-duty walking in Snowdonia. We became concerned for his welfare and as a result searches started to find him.

"These searches continued and unfortunately a body was found. I believe it is Michael but we have not been able to formally identify him.

"The weather conditions are extremely bad and are hindering our inquiries.

"There will be a coroner's investigation so I can't say any more at this time.

"As you can imagine all of his friends and colleagues are extremely upset. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family and I would ask that they be left in peace to come to terms with this tragic shock."

Tributes were pouring in for Chief Constable Todd last night as news of his death spread, with Home Secretary Jacqui Smith expressing her sympathies.

"I have been saddened to learn that Greater Manchester Police colleagues believe that Chief Constable Michael Todd has died.

"Chief Constable Todd has had a long and distinguished career in various forces and has contributed greatly to the fight against crime and terrorism. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues."

Former home secretary David Blunkett said: "Michael Todd was a decent and committed policeman who did a first-class job in difficult circumstances, including in dealing with counter-terrorism and the tragic death of Detective Constable Oakes.

"His death is a real tragedy and I personally feel very sad to hear of his loss. My thoughts are with his family."
