Subject: North Antrim constutency issues - response by 18 October
Thursday, April 17, 2008
At last weeks talks, Rev Ian Paisley and Ian Paisley Jnr took the opportunity to raise with the Prime Minister a number of issues on which they were seeking a positive outcome. Ministers here have been asked to pursue these and we have in turn been asked to make a report to David Hanson and SofS by the end of the week.
Ian Paisley Jnr has promised PS/David Hanson that he will provide a note on
the issues, but pending this, it might be helpful to you to have an initial
outline to enable briefing to be initiated. As relayed to us the issues are:
- Financial support for the North West 200
- Road improvements between Ballymena and Ballycastle
- Planning permission in relation to a golf resort and associated housing
- consultation on the future use of St Patrick's Barracks
- the inclusion of private land at the Giant's Causeway in the relevant
development plan
There is one other issue connected with a judicial review involving
landowners in the North Antrim area but details are at this stage vague.
It may well be that some of these issues have already been the subject of
representations to Departments and/or Ministers. It would be helpful if we
could have by close of play Wednesday 18th October:
- background to the issue, including previous involvement with Messrs Paisley
- the Department's current position
