Enjoy it while it lasts, because the current mini-heatwave could have
reached its peak.
Parts of the UK will start to see showers today, with an increased risk of
rain in Ireland on Saturday.
Northern England, Western Scotland, Wales and the South West all have an
heightened risk of rain on Friday, MeteoGroup forecasters said.
The same is true for Scotland, Ireland, the North of England and Wales on
Saturday, although the South East and East Anglia will continue to enjoy sun.
The news came amid speculation that yesterday could have been the UK's
hottest day of the year.
Figures were being collated yesterday afternoon to see whether the mercury
would top Wednesday's 25.3C (77.5F).
Wednesday was the warmest day of the year so far, but may just have been
toppled by summer temperatures yesterday. The sun might have gone to some
people's heads, as bookies announced that this week more money has been
wagered on the UK seeing a hot summer than all year.
Ladbrokes are offering odds of 9/2 that temperatures rise above 38.5C
(101.3F).
