Ulster's mini-heatwave could have reached its peak

Friday, May 09, 2008

Enjoy it while it lasts, because the current mini-heatwave could have reached its peak.

Parts of the UK will start to see showers today, with an increased risk of rain in Ireland on Saturday.

Northern England, Western Scotland, Wales and the South West all have an heightened risk of rain on Friday, MeteoGroup forecasters said.

The same is true for Scotland, Ireland, the North of England and Wales on Saturday, although the South East and East Anglia will continue to enjoy sun.

The news came amid speculation that yesterday could have been the UK's hottest day of the year.

Figures were being collated yesterday afternoon to see whether the mercury would top Wednesday's 25.3C (77.5F).

Wednesday was the warmest day of the year so far, but may just have been toppled by summer temperatures yesterday. The sun might have gone to some people's heads, as bookies announced that this week more money has been wagered on the UK seeing a hot summer than all year.

Ladbrokes are offering odds of 9/2 that temperatures rise above 38.5C (101.3F).
