Massive gorse fire 'was started deliberately'

Friday, May 09, 2008

Fire-fighters in Northern Ireland say a massive overnight gorse fire on Slieve Donard was started deliberately.

At one stage, RAF and Irish Coastguard helicopters were called in to help monitor the fire near Newcastle in Co Down.

The Fire Service says it was too dangerous to send crews in to fight the fire during darkness and they would only have been deployed if there was a threat to property.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Commander Area Commander Jim McCallum said: "We had three crews during the night mostly to monitor the fire. We are extremely reluctant to commit crews during the night-time essentially due to the danger of personnel falling into a gully or getting trapped by the fire."
