Drunk 'Darth Vader' escapes jail sentence

A man who dressed up as Darth Vader and attacked the founder of Britain's
first Jedi church was spared jail today.
Twenty seven year old Arwel Wynne Hughes, who has a chronic alcohol problem,
jumped over a garden wall in Holyhead and launched the assault on the Star
Wars obsessives while they filmed a documentary to promote their Jedi Church
- which was formed last year.
Hughes, from Holyhead, Anglesey, who was drunk at the time bellowed
``Darth Vader'' as he hit Barney Jones over the head with a crutch and
punched his cousin Michael in the thigh on March 25th.
Diane Williams, prosecuting, said: "He was wearing a black bin liner, had a
cut to his face and had in his hand a crutch - which he did not need to walk
as he was holding it in the air," Ms Williams said.
"He shouted Darth Vader several times before hitting Barney Jones on the
back of his head and then he hit Michael Jones to his leg."
Hughes then laughed, said he was joking and ran off, she added.
Mrs Frances Jones defending said her client had a serious alcohol problem. "
He has previously stopped drinking but the rehab he has needed has not been
available," Mrs Jones said.
"But now a place has become available at Touchstone in Colwyn Bay."
Judge Shaw said: "Perhaps the publicity surrounding your case has been a
good thing, and is the wake-up call you need to deal with your problems."
Hughes was sentenced to two months in jail suspended for one year at the
local Magistrates court today.
