Hole in the Wall Gang show pulled after Dunlop death

Saturday, May 17, 2008

A comedy programme set at this year's North West 200 was last night pulled from the television schedules following the tragic death of Robert Dunlop.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, featuring the popular Hole in the Wall Gang, had been due to air at 9pm last night on BBC One Northern Ireland.

But station bosses decided against showing it in light of Thursday night's tragedy, which claimed the life of the 15-time winner of the competition.

The show followed the adventures of County Antrim motorcycle racing brothers Jonjo 1 and Jonjo 2 McDowell as they search for their long-lost brother at the North West 200.

Shooting for the show took place earlier this week during the practice session for the North West 200, with the finished programme being edited together throughout the week.

Among the riders appearing 'in vision' during the programme was Robert Dunlop, with whom the cast spoke during their visit.

"We were talking to various bikers and Robert was one of the ones who was there," said Damon Quinn, who plays the character of loudmouth radio DJ Angry Steve.

"I was talking to him the day before. I asked if he was happy to appear in vision when we were shooting the stuff and he said no problem. He said he and his sons liked the show. The last thing I said to him was 'good luck in the race'. He was all ready for the practice run."

He added: "It's a comedy show and it isn't right to broadcast it; we'll think about it for a later time maybe."
