BBC journalist Sir Charles Wheeler dies aged 85

Friday, 4 July 2008

British journalist, Sir Charles Wheeler, has died at the age of 85.

He was the BBC's longest serving foreign correspondent, reporting from Spain, Germany and Delhi in the aftermath of the Second World War.

Sir Charles was known for his refusal to toe the official line - reporting in Delhi, he caused an international dispute when he referred to the new prime minister on air as ``an inexperienced eccentric''.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
