Man in court over Emmett Shiels murder

Saturday, 5 July 2008

An 18-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the killing of Emmett Shiels in Londonderry last month.

Gary Meenan from Bishop's Street in Derry is also charged with firearm offences.

A detective told the court that he believed the defendant did not fire the shots which killed Mr Shiels but was part of the gang which murdered him.

During five days of questioning Mr Meenan had consistently denied the charges.

Meenan was remanded in custody.

Two youths aged 16 and 17 also arrested in connection with the murder have been released unconditionally.

A 16-year-old girl was also released on Friday.

On Thursday an 18-year-old single mother was bailed after being charged with perverting the course of justice by seeking to frustrate the police inquiry into the murder.

Nadine Kelly from Celandine Court in the Gobnascale area of the Waterside was said in court to have given an alibi to a man alleged to have been involved in the killing.

Mr Shiels, a 22-year-old pizza delivery man from Tyrconnel Street in the Bogside was shot dead in Creggan in the early hours of Tuesday June 24 after becoming involved in an altercation.
