A staggering £55,000 has been poured into the George Best Foundation Fund following an auction of memorabilia associated with the Northern Ireland football legend.
The generous donation - which comes in the wake of an all-day event held last weekend - was largely boosted by the sale of The Genius Egg.
This inspired masterpiece - designed by Sarah Fabergé in honour of one of Ulster's favourite sporting stars - netted £18,000 for the coffers alone.
Other items up for sale included an Ulster Bank £5 note bearing the serial number 010000, a replica pair of gold-plated football boots and signed photos of the former Red Devil.
The auction, which was hosted by popular U105 radio presenter George Jones, achieved its goal of raising an unprecedented £50,000 for the charity on one day.
Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph last night, Steve Petrie, chair of the Portavogie Development Group, which organised the event, said he was pleased with the amount raised.
The George Best Foundation was set up with the aim of raising funds for liver research and promoting youth football.
