Belfast City Council rejects waste incinerator plans

Belfast City Council has voted against plans for a waste incinerator on the North Foreshore.

However, councillors opted for a mechanical biological centre which prepares refuse for landfill or burning near Belfast Lough.

Representatives rejected the incinerator earlier this month but an irregularity prompted a second ballot.

Arc 21, a group of councils in the east of Northern Ireland, wanted them to adopt the proposals so the facility could be built by 2016.

The incinerator would have been an Energy From Waste (EFW) plant which Arc 21 said could have provided power for 40,000 homes.

A consultation with Belfast ratepayers said 90% favoured it being built on the site.

Without waste treatment facilities in 2012/134 the council will face penalties of about £3.7 million a year.

Tonight there were 26 to 19 votes against the incinerator and 23 to 21 in favour of the mechanical biological treatment centre, the council said. It is now up to Arc 21 to decide the way forward.

you really do have to question why the public vote these people in.
Modern energy from waste facilities are totally clean and tried and tested technology. i know for a fact a number of the belfast councillors have visited efw facilities in Holland, Austria and the uk while very few have visited mechanical biological treatment plants. if the the issue is emissions, odours etc then mbt has the potential to create much greater problems.
