Belfast enters top 10 of UK's safest cities

Belfast is one of the safest cities to live in the UK, according to a national survey.

The city is the seventh safest for household accidents and the tenth least risky for thefts in the UK, the survey says.

Endsleigh Insurance Services carried out a four year analysis of claims records from thousands of customers across the UK.

The survey examined household theft claims and household accident claims.

It then ranked towns and cities by the frequency of claims.

Accidental damage claims on home insurance policies in Belfast were 28.1% below the national average.

Meanwhile, burglary claims were 33.6% below the UK average.

The city's Lord Mayor, Jim Rodgers, said: "These figures don't surprise me.

"It shows just how much our capital city is progressing. That's why so many people see Belfast now as a must-see city.

"But everyone can do more because I would like to see us right at the top.

"Every single citizen can play their part to bring that about if we all pull in the one direction."

Nottingham was dubbed the riskiest town or city in the country for household theft while Guildford was safest.

Endsleigh spokeswoman Rhiannon Harris said: "It's welcome news that we are seeing a gradual decrease in household theft right across the UK.

"The fact remains, however, that some towns and cities represent a greater risk than others and as our homes report shows, every householder in the country needs to be aware of the possibility of burglary."
