Belfast one of top cities to see before you die

Wednesday, 19 August 2009

Belfast has been voted as one of the top cities people should see before they die.

Its inhabitants have also been credited with having one of the sexiest regional accents in the UK, according to a new nationwide survey published today.

Belfast came in fourth in the list of UK destinations travellers should visit before they 'kick the bucket', with only Edinburgh, Bath and Liverpool ranked higher.

The city finished a place higher when it came to which place has the accent easiest on the ear. Only the folk of Edinburgh and Newcastle were considered to have more alluring brogues.

The questions were posed to 5,500 UK residents in the 'Bucket list' survey conducted by hotel chain Travelodge.

In regard to the places Belfast people want see before they cash in their chips, Oxford finished top, ahead of Edinburgh and London.

They are also voted the Newcastle accent as top of the pile.

Mark Kemp, Travelodge Reservations Director said there was not a better time for people in the UK to start exploring the cities on their doorstep.

"The UK is a great holiday destination and with 66 great cities to explore on our doorstep it can take a lifetime to see them all," he said.

"There is no time like the present to get out there and soak up the strong cultural diversity of these unique cities."

The nation's top ten must-see cities on Travelodge's 'Bucket List' are, in order:

Edinburgh

Bath

Liverpool

Belfast

Glasgow

Oxford

London

Cardiff

York

Cambridge

All my Yank friends and I agree that your accents are "easy on the ear". In fact we find it to be downright charming except for the fact that we also seem to have one heck of a time actually understanding what y'all are saying much of the time!

Excellent news...

Dare I say, I wait with baited breath for all the moaners and pessimists, to talk down our little city...

The Northern Ireland tourist board should be marketing like crazy in the cities abroad with direct airlinks to Belfast (not the bucket and spade destinations). Try and encourage foreign tourists on the back of these surveys, esp the high profile well respected Lonely Planet endorcement.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
