Blaze woman fights for life

A woman trapped in a fire at a Co Down guesthouse was today still fighting for life in hospital.

The woman was rescued from a first floor bedroom of the house at Downs Road in Newcastle in the early hours of Tuesday morning after becoming trapped by the flames.

She is being treated for serious burns to her body at the Royal Victoria Hospital where her condition was described this morning as "critical".

A second woman who was also rescued from the room is understood to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Three other residents managed to escape unhurt from the house, which overlooks the town's promenade, after the owner was alerted to the blaze by a fire alarm.

The Fire Service is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Sinn Fein MLA Willie Clarke said he believes the women are from the local area.
