Blind trekker progressing well in polar race

By Matthew McCreary

A blind Ulster polar trekker is making good progress in an intrepid race across the Antarctic.

Holywood man Mark Pollock (32) and his teammates are currently fighting for third place in the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race, which kicked off at the weekend.

The six teams taking part began their trek last weekend.

Day five’s progress yesterday saw Mark’s team maintain their high spirits.

In an audio log, Mark’s teammate Simon O’Donnell said: “We have made good progress today, the teams are getting along and everybody’s fine. We are looking forward to making more progress tomorrow.”

Among those also taking part are double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell and TV presenter Ben Fogle.
