Body is recovered from Newry canal

Police divers have recovered the body of a woman from a canal basin in Co Down.

The woman, who has not been named by police, was spotted entering the water at the Albert Basin area in Newry yesterday afternoon.

A PSNI spokeswoman said emergency crews were tasked to the scene and a body was later recovered.

The police said they are not treating the death as suspicious.

SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley said: “While the identity of the women is yet unknown and the circumstances of how she came to be the water are yet unclear it is evident that this is a tragedy.

“My thoughts and prayers are with this woman’s loved ones at this awful time for them.”

Mr Bradley also praised the actions of the police and emergency services involved in the operation.
