A man is taken to hospital with a head wound after the explosion at Kingsdale Park near police HQ in East Belfast . October 16, 2009
A residential area of east Belfast was thrown into chaos today when a a loud explosion shattered the silence at 7.30am.
Afterwards, a police helicopter hovered overhead while an ambulance, police Land-Rovers and bomb-disposal units descended on the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.
In the middle of the road lay the abandonded red sports car. It had suffered extensive damage.
Police suspect a device was planted under the car but were officers at the scene were giving nothing away.
Two large white screens were erected to cordon Kingsdale Park road from the public.
The road is lined with semi-detached houses and large open gardens and the PSNI headquarters is in the area.
Residents were hestitant to speak after officers told them to stay indoors during the course of the operation.
Lord Wallace Browne, who is a DUP MLA for east Belfast, said he cannot believe this kind of thing has happened in this area. He said: “This is a quiet residential area and this is an unusual event to have taken place. Even at the height of the Troubles this type of thing did not happen.
“Although there is a lot of speculation, I suspect this is the work of dissidents and it will not be tolerated”.
Alliance Lord Mayor Naomi Long who is an Assembly member for east Belfast has also condemned what has happened. She said: “The people who have done this have not just endangered the lives of the people involved but the lives of everyone in the neighbourhood. Children could have been walking to school with their parents.”
The Mayor of Castlereagh, councillor Lawrence Walker said: “I cannot believe that this type of activity is still taking place today. The outcome could have been a lot worse than what it was.”.

Th comment posted by Edward sickens me to the core! Bringing up orangism and defending these scum when this has nothing to do with it. I am not defending orangism, but drawing up these links between the two is the reason why these things happen its called bitterness.
This is a new age we live in and anyone who carries out these digusting, evil attacks, OR anyone who defends them has no place in our society and should be as dead as the past in which they are still living.

Totally agree with views here, no place in modern society for these crackpots
However while most us could come up with umpteen measures to try and root out these 'people', the do gooders, human / civil rights folk will be all over this
As with every crime nowadays the guilty are better off then the victims with rights for this and rights for that. Its disgusting, and these soical workers, probation folk are partly to blame. Need to recognise evil and properly act for the good of the majority

This man's injuries were TOTALY UNRELATED to the bomb explosion!

Ulster laws and courts need to be up date. The slap the hands policy of the do gooders just does not work. The law must be fully inforced on any violater no matter who or what the vilator is. A good rope can be used over again and save the tax payer plenty as well as set a exsample for others.

Who knows in 30 odd years these chaps might be in charge up in Stormont.
Sympathies to the young lady concerned and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We need a referendom in this country to bring in shoot to kill they want war give them it and stop the carnage of inocent fold. Let us decent folk of every religion, creed a nd color get on with our lives these csum bags have nothing to offer anyone. If this was any other country they would have been taken out by now, They say they are at war well all is fair in love and war no public inquiries or questions let our police force take them out instead of tying thier hands behine thier back them moaning the police do nothing. Pleas ein the name of God let them do the job and get rid ot these low life nothings by any means.

I agree with the sentiments expressed here. However, history always repeats itself in this country. The future scenario is that mouthpieces for these murderers will appear with a political ideology that will mimic previous Sinn fein/IRA lies. Our immoral and do gooder politicians will eventually engage with them and the perpetrators we are lucky enough to convict in the court will be given early release, just like the ones running round the streets at present, punishment beating, drug dealing and getting twenty grand a year as "community workers". Hard to believe? Watch this space !!

Why not bring back the death penalty for murder and attempted murder by terrorists. One: it gets rid of them and Two: it saves money keeping them in Jail.

Graham Smyth - you've hit the nail on the head! They're crackpots, albeit dangerous ones.
Here's hoping the lady concerned makes a full recovery.

It's taken the amateur political class nearly two decades to get us to where we are right now. They've not faced up to any of the demons plaguing society, preferring instead to take the salary and do the bare minimum. Complete failure of political leadership has given dissidents the platform they wanted. Now innocent people are reaping the whirlwind.
You want someone to blame for this and the general slide backward we're experiencing? Have a look at the news tonight and you'll see all the same old politicians saying the same old guff. It's up to you whether you swallow it or not.

First of all, this is criminal act and I hope that whoever did it will be caught and prosecuted within the law.
Having said that, I find it ironic that there are so many comments describing the perpetrators as "idiots" and "mindless thugs"! I wonder how many of these people are involved in the orange order marches in the summer? The marches that help perpetuate the sectarian bitterness in N. Ireland.

I understood that ALL the ammunition had been stored 'beyond use' So WHERE are these hard liners getting their materials?
Posted by Stuart | 16.10.09, 16:11 GMT
these so called dissidents are murderous depraved lunatics, who will always disagree with every thing and one, if they got a united ireland they would disagree with the way it was run, they are dangerous to all in ireland irrispective of faith creed or religion, if you disagree with them that makes you thier enemy to agree would damn you to hell along with them

I've had enough of these scumballs. They are not doing this in my name. They are the creators of nightmares and the killers of dreams. Planting their bombs and cowering back across the border to their mammies. Come on out into the light if you're so brave. We all want to see you brave men and congratulate you on your cowardice.

for too long the so called government has dealt with terrorists with a kid glove approach , letting these people spread their vile propaganda , now its time to deal with it . no more stand offs no more negativity , go get them before they get any more of a foothold
its crunch time

Find them, stop them, jail them (as criminals, not as political prisoners). Can it really be that difficult?
Posted by WH | 16.10.09, 15:16 GMT
sadly, there is still a significant minority here who 'feast' on innocent blood - very scary indeed...............
