Crime risk in Northern Ireland is UK’s lowest
Saturday, 28 November 2009
People in Northern Ireland are less likely to be a victim of crime than those living in England and Wales, new research has revealed.
The Northern Ireland Crime Survey (NICS) found that the risk of being a victim of crime over the last year was 13.4%, compared with a figure of 23.4% for England and Wales.
But the research recorded a drop in the number of certain crimes reported to police, with those interviewed claiming “police could not have done anything”.
Criminal Justice Minister Paul Goggins welcomed the figures but said Government was committed to further reducing crime.
“This survey confirms that the number of people falling victim to crime in Northern Ireland has fallen, and the figures are at their lowest level since this crime survey was introduced,” he said.
