Customs seizes 150,000 cigarettes destined for Northern Ireland

Customs officers in Dublin yesterday scored another success in their crackdown on a smuggling gang based in Northern Ireland.

Officers seized 150,000 cigarettes and 12 kilos of tobacco, with a street value of €60,000 after searching passengers who had arrived at Dublin airport on a charter flight from the Canary Islands. The shipment represented a potential loss to the Revenue of €46,500.

The searches were carried out as part of an intelligence-led operation against the gang.

A Customs spokesman said: "This was another significant success for Customs following a similar operation last week against the same smuggling gang. Officers believe the cigarettes and tobacco were destined for the black market in Northern Ireland."
