Cyra has Irish dancing world title in her sights

Derry dancing star has world at her feet

A 10-year-old Londonderry girl has danced her way to success in a string of competitions across the UK, Ireland and the USA.

Little Cyra Taylor has jigged and reeled her way to take the top position in the All-Ireland Under-10 Girls Championships this year held in Killarney.

She is currently Ulster and All Scotland champion, and now has the world title in her sights.

In fact, Cyra has now won every major title possible for a child to win at such a young age, having competed all over the country and achieving success in the American nationals at the age of eight.

She is hoping to qualify later this year for her first World Championships, which will be held in Philadelphia on April 5 next year.

Cyra, the youngest of three sisters, started dancing at the age of three when she joined the Derry-based McConomy School of Irish Dancing.

Her mother Gina said today: "We are so proud of what she has achieved. At the moment there is only one title that she has yet to achieve and that is the world title.

"She has been dancing since she was very young and she has just never stopped. It's all she does and it's all she wants to do."

Cyra trains with her tutors at least three times a week, which increases to four or five times a week before each competition.

"They are the best teachers in the world," Mrs Taylor said.

"There is a lot of travelling and a lot of work involved because of all the competitions. We are always on the go.

"There was the feis in Derry recently. Before that we were in London and then Dublin as well. Hopefully now next year we will see how things go at the World Championships in America."
