Derry in running to be European Youth Capital

Londonderry's bid to be the UK Capital of Culture today got a shot in the arm after the city was shortlisted to become the European Youth Capital 2013.

Derry was chosen yesterday alongside Maribor in Slovenia, Goes in The Netherlands and Karlstad in Sweden.

It was one of 11 cities to enter the competition and now has until October 13 to persuade the judges.

The winner will be decided at a meeting of the European Youth Forum on November 15 this year.

The bid was the idea of Derry community worker Fergal Barr and has been backed by dozens of community, statutory and voluntary organisations from across the North West and beyond.

A European Youth Foundation and national committee is to be set up in the city next year to push for

ward a programme of ideas for people aged between five and 25.

It will work with organisations across Northern Ireland and the Republic. A second local programme committee will be backed by organisations including Derry City Council and Derry's urban regeneration company Ilex.
