Docs to meet MLAs over job loss fears
Monday, 16 April 2007
A delegation from Northern Irish Medics, which represents more than 200 junior doctors across Ulster, was expected to voice opposition to a new Government selection process - Modernising Medical Careers (MMC).
The meeting with MLAs, MPs and senior health service civil servants is scheduled to take place at the Long Gallery this afternoon.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, medics warned that MMC, which aims to cut the length of training and fast tracking sub-consultants, could result in the loss of up to 400 jobs.
The doctors also said the process used to implement the new system was flawed and called for a return to traditional recruitment methods.
Last month more than 200 doctors voted unanimously to fight the MMC during a special meeting at Belfast City Hospital.
