DUP MP to attend opening of GAA pitch
Monday, 8 September 2008
A new Gaelic games pitch is to be unveiled with the help of DUP minister Gregory Campbell.
It will be a rare example of co-operation between a DUP politician and the GAA, but the prospect was hailed as a further sign of progress in Northern Ireland society.
The St Brigid’s Gaelic athletic club in south Belfast is to celebrate its tenth anniversary with the opening of a new pitch — the first time it has had its own playing field.
The new facilities will be unveiled later this month with GAA President Nickey Brennan and the Culture Minister Mr Campbell among the special guests.
Mr Campbell is understood to be keen to attend the event.
The thriving St Brigid’s club, set-up by a handful of enthusiasts, now has hundreds of members and enjoys cross-community support, with all the main churches set to attend its anniversary event.
Until now St Brigid’s, which serves the Malone suburb, has only had access to playing facilities thanks to the support of Harlequins rugby club and the YMCA.
The new pitch will be unveiled on September 13.
The playing field was financed with the help of the Sports Council, which is supported by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Fair play to the DUP and well done Mr Campbell!
The DUP has shown itself big enough to move beyond the small-minded sectarian divide and to reach out to the other side for the sake of peace and understanding
Everyone knows that the British Army, the RUC had Gaelic football teams, as does the current PSNI: Gaelic games are forms of SPORT and not a political or sectarian movement. Anyone who says otherwise knows nathin about it

i do not think they should be welcomed here!!!! They would not have the same approach to us if the shoe was on the other foot. SF needs to stop laying down and being soft in all aspects in general

Its good to see that in some situations different parties can set differences aside for the good of the community.
