Elderly couple targeted by bigots

Tuesday, 29 December 2009

An elderly couple are “terrified” of being targeted again by youths after their car was badly damaged in a sectarian attack in west Belfast.

The 79-year-old man and his wife — who do not want to be named — had just returned from church to their home in Workman Avenue on Sunday evening when the windows of their car were smashed.

It is understood around £500 worth of damage was caused to the Rover car. The couple were not in the car at the time.

Community worker Gerald Solinas said the attack — the latest in a number of anti-social incidents in the street — has left local people angered.

“Around 6.15pm, youths came through the gates carrying bottles of alcohol which they then used to smash the front and rear windows of the car,” said Mr Solinas.

“The couple are really shaken and upset and are terrified that they will be targeted again. They are scared to even talk about it as they have been targeted several times this year,” he added.

Anyone with information should contact detectives at Tennent Street Station on: 0845 600 8000.

These bullies/bigots are the scourge of modern day living. People have a right to live in peace and police should be doing more to eliminate these thugs from society.
Perhaps a new set of laws will need to be brought in to rid the land of sectarianism and bigotry from wherever it emanates.
A new strategy may also be required i.e. selective targeting of particular areas. Target the main bullies and the sheep who follow them will soon cool down. Stiffer prison sentences are essential.

I sincerely hope that 2010 will see sectarianism - and the morons who perpetrate and condone it - become increasingly marginalised to the point of disappearing altogether.

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
