Exhibition of dead bodies to create a stir

Thursday, 8 January 2009

It is one of the most gruesome exhibitions ever staged involving dead bodies put on display for the public.

And it’s coming to Ireland in a Dublin show on January 24 that even the promoters MCD admit will be “shocking and graphic”.

The exhibition, called Bodies, has already caused controversy in the United States with some people questioning the origin of the remains which came from unidentified or unclaimed people who died in China.

Bodies features real, whole and partial body specimens that have been dissected and preserved so visitors can see organs and their systems. The remains are those of people who died in China.

Most have been dissected by Dr Roy Glover, a retired University of Michigan anatomy and cell-biology professor.

A spokesperson for MCD Productions said: “The exhibition is both shocking and graphic but I think once you get over the initial fear and become aware of the reasons and ideology behind it, the show has both an educational and scientific element to it.

I really dont understand how anyone can really be creeped out by it.... dead bodies are everywhere.. everything dies eventually.... its pretty neat to me... Im young but if I die Id like my body to be displayed on one of these things..

See - there is a problem with this exhibition - as it is only a copy cat of the original Body World exhibition - done by Gunther von Hagens. He used bodies - which were legally donated. There are several - copy cat shows on the road - like the one currently in Dublin.

Oh dear, this is the stuff of nightmares. Is nothing sacred any more? As an artist myself, this smacks a bit of Hirst. Shock = money.
