Fans set to turn out for Ulster Grand Prix

Thousands of race fans are expected to brave the wet conditions and flock to Dundrod today for the final day of the Ulster Grand Prix.

Some have come from parts of Europe and as far as Australia to watch some of the world’s top riders compete on one of the toughest circuits in the world.

Stephen Wilson, spokesman for the Ulster Grand Prix, said despite the weather and a few minor difficulties, it had been a great week for both competitors and spectators.

Yesterday, a resident living on the circuit parked her car in protest on the Budore section of the track.

The incident caused practice session and the Dundrod 150 race to be delayed by more than an hour and a half.

“On a whole it has been a grand week,” Mr Wilson said. “The club had some real difficulties with the weather and different situations on Wednesday and Thursday but we are happy with way things have gone so far.

“The crowds were quite good on Thursday. We had quite a few people out and about the place. And yesterday we had two unofficial lap records in the superstock class.

“All we are hoping for now is that the sun will be shining on race day.”

Organisers will close the roads at 9.30am and are hoping to get the first race under way by about 10.30am.

But before the starting pistol is sounded, a Wild Geese Airshow is scheduled to take place at 10am and will be followed by the seven lap Superstock Race.

The highlight of the day’s events will culminate with the Belfast Telegraph Ulster Grand Prix Superbike Race where top qualifier New Zealander Bruce Anstey will take to the tracks against riders including, Adrian Archibald, who polled second, Cameron Donald and Ian Lougher.

And while the weather could prove to be a problem for race organisers, like it was last year, Mr Wilson said they would hold off as long as they could before they made any decisions.

“The roads do not close until 8.30pm and weather permitting we hope not to have any delays,” he said. “Race fans know what it is like and from the looks of things yesterday will be staying on to watch the race. We are all looking forward to the event.”

Brown can't even stick to his own nonsense on Afghanistan

Bit by bit, as happened with Iraq, the reasons for staying in Afghanistan slide into gibberish. So Gordon Brown's reasons for the war seem to change every week.
