Candidate: Jim Gamble

There looks to be a packed field in the race to succeed Sir Hugh Orde as Chief Constable of the PSNI.

It is understood that 14 applicants have already put their name forward for consideration with a week still left before the closing date.

The final decision will be made by a Policing Board interview panel.

High-profile names already talked about as potential replacements include Jim Gamble, the former RUC man who now heads the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre in London and Julie Spence, Cambridgeshire police chief.

Sir Hugh will leave to take up the presidency of the Association of Chief Police Officers in September after seven years as the senior policeman in Northern Ireland.
