First class delivery as baby born in Post Office

Paul Childs (58), a postmaster in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and his wife Helen (54) rushed into action after a customer went into labour in their shop.

Moments later — before paramedics had arrived — a healthy baby girl was born.

The mother, who lives locally, had visited the shop at about 9.30am on Monday. But her routine trip took a dramatic twist.

“Her waters broke and we asked the lady to come out the back,” said Mr Childs. “My wife paid for the lady’s taxi, which was waiting outside and, by the time she got back the baby was here.

He added: “We put the baby on the scales and she weighed 5lb 15oz. We worked out that’s the equivalent of an £8.22 first class parcel.”
