First Lady makes a flying stop in Ireland

US First Lady Mrs Michelle Obama made a brief stopover at Shannon Airport yesterday on her way back to Washington.

She was travelling home from the the G20 summit in London and a NATO summit in Strasbourg, attended by her husband President Barack Obama.

Just a few hours later, an aircraft carrying US Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton also made a refuelling stop at the mid west airport.

The jet carrying Mrs Obama, part of the Presidential Airlift Group based at Andrews Air Force Base, touched down at Shannon at 2.25pm yesterday. Armed detectives, uniformed gardai and secret service personnel were standing by for the aircraft when it landed.

However, Mrs Obama did not leave the aircraft while it was on the ground.
