Fools rush in for a fun festival on city streets

The streets of Belfast will come alive with colour and comedy this weekend as the Festival of Fools hits town.

Among the acts taking to the pavements of the city centre yesterday were Seamus and Sean with the S Factor performing their interpretation of some of pop music’s best-loved classics.

And festival veteran That Man returned to the streets of Cornmarket for a special display of the sleight of hand skills which have made him a master of manipulation.

The festival, which runs until Monday, features dozens of free shows including some of the world’s leading acrobats, trapeze artists and physical comedians.

The centrepiece of this year’s festival is a life-size labyrinth in the grounds of the City Hall populated by a series of comic and bizarre characters.

Festival director Will Chamberlain said: “Five years ago even I thought we were crazy to stage a street theatre festival in Belfast in May, but since then the incredible response from the public and performers has established the Festival of Fools as one of the most popular events of its kind in Europe.”
