Gun attack linked to battle over drugs trade

A gun attack on a house in Ballymena was linked to a battle between two families for control of the drugs trade in the area, a judge said yesterday.

Mr Justice Weatherup made the comment in the High Court during a bail application by Andrew O'Neill (20), of Kicora, Ballymena, who denied attempting to murder Raymond Law and possessing drugs with intent to supply.

The judge said O'Neill was alleged have been the driver of a car from which shots were fired at a house in the Ballykeel area on October 12.

Mr Justice Weatherup said inquiries were on-going and if they resulted in the apprehension of the gunman the police would be in a better position to learn more about O'Neill's defence that he was acting under duress.

O’Neill was refused bail.
