Hand-held fingerprint scanners to be used in UK from 2009

In the UK, hand-held scanners enabling police to check fingerprints on the street will be available to every police force by next year.

The devices should cut the time required to identify suspects and keep more officers on the beat.

But campaigners are concerned it will mean that more information about innocent people will be held on police databases.
