Historic hotel hit by blaze

Tuesday, 10 November 2009

A pall of smoke, fog and gloom hung over one of the Republic’s most picturesque villages yesterday after a blaze partially gutted an historic hotel.

The 222-year-old Lawless Hotel in Aughrim, Co Wicklow, was extensively damaged after a fire broke out early yesterday morning.

There were no guests staying in the building when the blaze broke out and no injuries were reported.

The massive fire gutted part of the premises, owned by businessman Joe Whyte. But the granite facade of the famous hotel, which dates from around 1787, has not been too badly damaged

Horse first, then cart ... it’s time nationalists got real about unity

No political regime likes uncertainty. Talk of unexpected elections makes politicians twitchy. Meal tickets can be put at risk.
