Graffiti in support of fascist extremists Combat 18 has been daubed on republican monuments in a cemetery in west Belfast.

Vandals painted slogans in support of the hardline group in the republican plot at Milltown cemetery on Wednesday night.

Two monuments were yesterday afternoon still emblazoned with ‘C18’.

Sinn Fein Assembly member Paul Maskey said: “Overnight, racist and sectarian slogans, along with Combat 18 graffiti, were daubed on the republican plot in the cemetery. A considerable amount of damage has been done to the graves.”

One of the monuments commemorates Irish republicans who fought on the anti-fascist side in the Spanish civil war and the other those “who struggled and died for the establishment of a socialist republic by the Workers Party”.

Ulster Unionist councillor Jim Rodgers condemned the graffiti. “This is absolutely deplorable. It’s bad enough attacking any property, but whenever it’s a cemetery, its disgraceful, appalling and sickening,” he said.

“The dead should be able to rest in peace. I am angry at hearing that this has happened in Milltown cemetery.

“It doesn’t matter where anti-social behaviour is happening — it is always wrong.”

Police said the vandalism had not been reported to them but said they would follow up any details they were given.

Gina, go take a little nerve tablet mate.

It is a vile act destroy a grave, regardless of someone's beliefs. My uncle has been buried in this same graveyard for forty years and we've had two attacks on his grave in that period. He was a decent, kind, hard-working, honest married man, who was killed in his prime, (30's) in a tragic accident. He wasn't involved with paramilitaries, but his name would suggest he was Protestant. I would/could never do that to anyone. These IRA graves are no different and should be left alone. I'm sickened

OMG Bren don't you have plenty to say. Regardless of the intelligence or otherwise of the perps, they would appear to have run out of headstone. The alternative could be that someone called Repup has a contract out on them.

Seriously though, I concur with soarer.

This behaviour seems somewhat ironic. The monuments which were defaced honour Republicans who fought as government Loyalists against the Catholic Nationalists led by Franco.

William, what is more amzing is that you still believe in the fictitious ramblings of the Bible and that as a 'good christian' you cannot even come out and condemn a horrible act against your fellow brother's grave!

Lumina "I wonder who really painted these "convenient" slogans." Obviously someone without the intelligence to spell Republicans, unless they meant to say "Kill Repup"!?! I suppose though when you consider the education of the average inner city youth these days...

Gino, you're obviously barking! William you're obviously a fool, why should Jim have to explain RIP to you?!?!?!

Soarer I couldn't agree more, but likewise the similar attacks on the grave of ihab shoukri should also stop.

Proper management, and supervision by Probation Board of those serving Community Service Orders in Miltown Cemetery is non existent. Peremptory observation demonstrates how bad general maintenance of this Cemetery is.

Disgusting behaviour. This has nothing to do with who did what and when. These are graves. Their family and friends mourn them. Anyone who attacks graves is a) a coward b) a petty vandal and c) beneath contempt.

Let the dead "rest in peace"quoth Jimmy Rodgers.Does Rodgers ,as a christian, support the R.C. tradition of inscribing the letter "R.I.P" on their headstones? Is Rodgers ignorant of Biblical theology stating that "the dead know nothing".That upon death, the believers spirit departs the body and is immediately in the presence of the Lord. The non-believer's spirit goes to Hell.
So exactly what is"resting in peace" Jimmy?

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
