A psychiatrist and former adviser to disgraced MP Iris Robinson, who reportedly claimed he could ‘cure’ gays of their homosexuality, has been reported to the General Medical Council.

An undercover journalist made the complaint after receiving therapy from Dr Paul Miller, who worked for Mrs Robinson when she chaired the Stormont Health Committee and made her controversial comments claiming homosexuality was an “abomination”.

Dr Miller, who also worked for the Mater and Craigavon hospitals, runs a practice in the Newforge area of Belfast.

London-based reporter Patrick Strudwick, who is openly gay, said he had posed as a patient and reported his findings. He claimed Dr Miller had told him he was gay because he had been wounded as a child.

The BBC said it had asked Dr Miller a number of questions. He had replied in a statement: “I am currently responding to a complaint made to the GMC and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment at this time.”
