Irish government: country's beef ‘poses no danger’
Wednesday, 10 December 2008
The Irish government last night insisted the Republic’s beef was safe even though it was tainted by a toxic substance at the centre of an international pork safety scare.
Irish Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith maintained there was no public health risk after tests revealed three beef herds had been contaminated by infected feed.
Eight other farms have been given the all-clear and tests continue at another 34.
No beef will be recalled.
Mr Smith said tests revealed traces of dioxins that were two to three times above recommended limits.
