Is 10% price cut by Phoenix Gas on the cards?
Friday, 24 July 2009
Gas prices could be set to fall for the second time in a year after Phoenix Gas confirmed it would be looking at the possibility of making tariff cuts in the next few months.
The company would not comment on the level of cuts being considered but there was speculation it could be as high as 10%.
The news was revealed after Phoenix contacted small business customers and retailers in Northern Ireland to notify them that prices could be cut.
The scale of any reduction has yet to be discussed with the Consumer Council and the Utility Regulator.
The Consumer Council said it would not comment on the speculation, but the moves have been welcomed from other quarters.
Glyn Roberts, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA), said: “Any reduction in costs is welcome for recession hit small retailers and we would urge other local energy companies to follow Phoenix Supply’s lead by moving to reassure small retailers and businesses that they are doing all they can to bring prices down as quickly as possible.”
Strangford MLA Simon Hamilton — who is vice chair of the Assembly’s All Party Energy Group — said: “Energy prices in Northern Ireland have been far too high in recent times and continuing downward pressure on prices produced by reductions in the wholesale gas prices must result in lower charges to the consumer.”
